Description
Along the lateral aspect of the male leg and foot, the deep fascia (fascia cruris) is continuous inferiorly with the superior and inferior extensor retinacula anterior to the ankle and with the lateral band of the plantar fascia on the sole, forming an investing sheath that hugs the contours of the lateral malleolus. Superficial to the fibula and lateral malleolus, the fascial layer spans toward the calcaneus and cuboid, while deep to it the fibularis (peroneus) longus and brevis muscle bellies taper into tendons that course posterior and inferior to the malleolus. Distally, the fascia and retinacula define osteofibrous tunnels adjacent to the talus and calcaneus, with the fifth metatarsal lying anteroinferior in the lateral column. Tight anatomy. Clinically, this lateral-side perspective clarifies where the fibular tendons and their synovial sheaths become constrained behind the lateral malleolus, a common site for tenosynovitis, snapping peroneal tendons, and retinacular injury after inversion sprain.
