Description
Running from the mandible to the hyoid, the digastric muscle is presented in left sagittal section with its anterior and posterior bellies separated by the intermediate tendon. That tendon loops inferior to the stylohyoid muscle and is tethered to the body and greater horn of the hyoid, while the anterior belly courses anteroinferiorly to the digastric fossa on the inner aspect of the mandibular symphysis and the posterior belly runs posterosuperiorly toward the mastoid notch of the temporal bone. Surrounding osseous landmarks include the cranial base, nasal and orbital cavities, dentition within the maxilla and mandible, and the upper cervical spine with the atlas articulating at the occiput. Relationships are easy to read. Sagittal depiction of the digastric clarifies the suprahyoid sling that elevates the hyoid during swallowing and, when the hyoid is fixed, assists in depressing the mandible. This is a surgical corridor. The posterior belly and intermediate tendon form a reliable landmark when identifying the hypoglossal nerve in submandibular and carotid triangle dissections, and the muscle’s close relationship to the submandibular gland and level I lymph nodes is central in neck dissection planning and interpretation of infection spread in the submandibular space. Small structure, big consequences. Use it in head and neck anatomy labs to teach suprahyoid muscle orientation and attachments against stable bony references, and in otolaryngology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, or speech-language pathology materials discussing dysphagia mechanics and submandibular approaches. It also fits radiology teaching files as a companion to mid-sagittal CT or MR anatomy where the hyoid, mandible, and upper cervical vertebrae anchor soft-tissue identification.
