Dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (nucleus dorsalis nervi vagi) occupies a longitudinal column in the dorsal medulla, immediately deep to the floor of the fourth ventricle. From a posterior brainstem perspective, it sits medial to the nucleus tractus solitarius and close to the midline landmarks of the vagal trigone, with the hypoglossal trigone positioned more medially and rostrally along the same ventricular floor. Caudally, the nucleus approaches the region of the obex, and rostrally it relates to the area postrema and adjacent dorsal medullary gray. Small, dense gray matter. Big physiology.
