Seen from the anterior aspect, the adult male femur is oriented with the spherical head directed medially and slightly superiorly on a distinct neck, while the greater trochanter projects laterally at the proximal end. The smooth anterior shaft descends distally with a gentle convexity and broadens into the trochlear (patellar) surface, flanked by the medial and lateral condyles. Subtle surface relief marks the transition between articular regions and muscle attachment sites. Clean geometry. An anterior femur view is the one most often matched to standard AP radiographs of the thigh and knee, so it helps correlate bony landmarks with imaging findings. Neck-shaft angle, femoral anteversion, and proximal morphology are central to teaching intracapsular femoral neck fractures and basic hip arthroplasty templating, while the distal trochlea and condylar contours matter for patellar tracking and distal femur fracture classification. Orthopedic approaches rely on these palpable and radiographic landmarks, from the greater trochanter for lateral hip access to the condyles for alignment around the knee.
