Description
Seen in lateral projection, the proximal femur presents the spherical caput femoris set medially, joined by the collum femoris to a prominent trochanter major that rises superior and lateral to the neck. Just inferior to the neck, the trochanter minor sits posteromedially, while the diaphysis descends in a gentle anterior bow toward the distal metaphysis. At the knee end, the condylus lateralis projects slightly farther anterior than the condylus medialis, with the epicondylar contours and the patellar surface transitioning onto the posterior intercondylar region. Lateral views of the femur matter because they clarify torsion and sagittal-plane contour, the two features that get misread when you only study an anterior or posterior plate. The relationship of the greater trochanter to the femoral neck frames discussions of femoral neck fractures and fixation corridors, and it also orients the insertion of gluteus medius and minimus, a point that comes up quickly when evaluating Trendelenburg gait after hip surgery.
