Description

Arising on the lateral surface of the left frontal lobe, the middle frontal gyrus (gyrus frontalis medius) runs anteroposteriorly between the superior frontal sulcus superiorly and the inferior frontal sulcus inferiorly. Anteriorly it approaches the frontal pole, while posteriorly it tapers toward the precentral region, lying just anterior to the precentral gyrus and the central sulcus. A blue overlay marks a cortical territory along the posterior frontal convexity, consistent with precentral (primary motor) cortex, with the cerebellum and brainstem positioned posteroinferiorly for orientation. Gyri and sulci are rendered with clear relief. This lateral perspective matters because it is the working view for localizing frontal lobe lesions and planning approaches that respect eloquent cortex. The posterior middle frontal gyrus contains the frontal eye field (classically Brodmann area 8), and lesions here can produce impaired contralateral saccades and gaze deviation toward the side of the lesion, a correlation that becomes practical in stroke assessment and tumor boards.
