Description
Viewed laterally, the cerebral hemisphere presents the angular gyrus (gyrus angularis) as a posterior parietal convolution that caps the posterior end of the superior temporal sulcus and curves around the termination of the sulcus temporalis superior. Superiorly, it blends with the supramarginal gyrus at the posterior end of the lateral sulcus region, and posteriorly it approaches the occipital lobe near the parieto-occipital junction (best appreciated by following the sulci toward the occipital pole). Gyri and sulci of the lateral convexity remain prominent, with the cerebellum and brainstem positioned inferior and posteroinferior to the cerebrum. This lateral angle matters because the angular gyrus sits at the crossroads of parietal, temporal, and occipital association cortices, a territory that anchors reading, writing, calculation, and multimodal semantic integration in the dominant hemisphere. Lesions here, classically from an inferior division middle cerebral artery infarct or a posterior parietal tumor, can produce Gerstmann syndrome (agraphia, acalculia, finger agnosia, and left-right disorientation) and alexia with agraphia when adjacent language networks are involved. For neurosurgical planning and neuropsychology teaching, the sulcal boundaries shown on the lateral surface give practical surface landmarks for localizing posterior perisylvian cortex before correlating to axial MRI or functional mapping.
