Description

Anteriorly oriented adult African male habitus is rendered semi-transparent to expose the thoracic and upper abdominal viscera. Within the thorax, paired lungs occupy the right and left pleural cavities, flanking the mediastinum where the heart sits centrally with its apex directed inferolaterally to the left. Inferior to the diaphragm, the distal esophagus descends in the midline and passes into the stomach in the left upper quadrant, with the gastroesophageal junction positioned just left of the vertebral column and the gastric body curving inferiorly and laterally beneath the left costal margin. Emphasizing the esophagus and stomach in red draws attention to the foregut segment most often interrogated in reflux and dysphagia workups, where the anatomic relationship between the esophageal hiatus and the proximal stomach underlies sliding hiatal hernia and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
