Description
Posterior torso anatomy is rendered through a semi-transparent integument, allowing the thoracic and abdominopelvic viscera to be read in situ in an obese adult male. Superiorly, the trachea bifurcates into the main bronchi as it descends into the right and left lungs, with the heart positioned centrally in the mediastinum between them. Inferior to the diaphragm, the liver occupies the right upper quadrant (viewer’s left in a rear view), the stomach sits more to the left, and the small intestine coils centrally while the large intestine frames it peripherally; the kidneys are suggested in a posterior, retroperitoneal position. A rear view with organ translucency is a practical way to teach depth and compartmentalization, because it forces attention to what is posterior (retroperitoneal) versus what is suspended intraperitoneally. Obesity adds clinical realism: increased truncal adiposity can obscure surface landmarks, complicate auscultation and percussion fields, and shift the way learners conceptualize access for posterior approaches such as flank entry to the kidney or posterior chest examination. Orientation matters. Confusing left and right in a posterior projection is a common early error, and this composition helps correct it.
