Description
Seen from a posterior perspective with a transparent body wall, the thoracic viscera include the paired lungs flanking the midline mediastinum, with the descending thoracic aorta tracking inferiorly just anterior to the vertebral column. Inferior to the diaphragm, the abdominal cavity reveals the retroperitoneal kidneys positioned bilaterally, the left typically a little more superior than the right, while the abdominal aorta continues in the midline and gives off lateral branches toward the renal hila. More anterior digestive organs are suggested through the overlay, but the small intestine occupies the central abdomen and the large intestine frames it peripherally, terminating distally at the anal canal in the midline of the perineum. Posterior relationships dominate. That is the point. A back view of full-body viscera is a practical way to teach what lies close to the posterior abdominal wall, because kidney and aorta anatomy is often misunderstood when learners only see anterior dissections. Renal trauma from a posterior blow, percutaneous nephrostomy access, and posterior retroperitoneal approaches all depend on appreciating that the kidneys sit deep to the lower ribs and paraspinal musculature with the aorta slightly left of midline before bifurcating into the common iliac arteries. Even in an elderly male, where renal size and vascular tortuosity may vary, the positional logic stays the same and helps orient interpretation of CT and MR axial series.
