Posteriorly oriented over the back of an elderly male torso, a semi-transparent body wall reveals the thoracic and abdominopelvic viscera in situ. Paired lungs occupy the right and left pleural cavities lateral to the vertebral column, with the trachea descending in the midline and bifurcating into the main bronchi at the level of the carina. Inferior to the diaphragm, the liver sits predominantly in the right upper quadrant, the stomach lies more to the left, and coils of small intestine are framed peripherally by the large intestine, while the kidneys appear retroperitoneal on either side of the spine with the urinary bladder centered low in the pelvis.
