Description
Plantar anatomy is presented beneath the skin with the plantar aponeurosis opened to expose the lateral compartment of the sole and the small, fusiform flexor digiti minimi brevis (flexor digiti minimi brevis pedis). The muscle lies inferior to the shaft and head of the fifth metatarsal, running distally to blend with a short tendon inserting on the base of the proximal phalanx of the fifth toe, immediately plantar to the fifth metatarsophalangeal joint. Lateral to it sits the abductor digiti minimi, while the flexor digitorum brevis occupies a more medial position across the central sole; the calcaneus and tarsometatarsal articulations anchor the proximal bony context. Functionally, flexor digiti minimi brevis provides active plantarflexion at the fifth metatarsophalangeal joint and helps stabilize the lateral longitudinal arch during stance, so its relationship to the fifth metatarsal head and the plantar plates matters when you are teaching push-off mechanics. Small, but clinically noisy. The muscle and its tendon sit in the same operative corridor used for lateral plantar approaches to fifth-ray pathology, and they lie adjacent to branches of the lateral plantar nerve, a relevant point when discussing denervation patterns in diabetic neuropathy or iatrogenic nerve injury during plantar incisions.
