Description
Centered within the pediatric thorax, the heart sits in the middle mediastinum with its apex directed inferolaterally to the left and its base oriented posterosuperiorly toward the great vessels. A semi-transparent anterior body wall allows the cardiac silhouette to be appreciated in situ, with the right atrium and right ventricle lying more anterior, and the left atrium positioned more posterior. The myocardium forms the bulk of the organ, while the superior mediastinum is suggested by the proximal great vessels, including the ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk emerging superiorly from the ventricular outflow tracts. Adjacent thoracoabdominal organs are faintly visible, providing landmarks for the pericardial region against the diaphragm inferiorly. Child anatomy changes the framing of cardiac relationships you teach and the clinical assumptions you make.
