Description
Presented in lateral profile, the L3 vertebra is highlighted in blue within a short segment of the male lumbar spine, with the L2 and L4 vertebral bodies stacked superiorly and inferiorly and separated by pale intervertebral discs. The L3 vertebral body sits anterior to the vertebral arch, while the pedicle and lamina sweep posteriorly to the spinous process. Along the posterior margin of the vertebral body, the superior and inferior vertebral notches of L3 are clearly defined on the pedicle, positioned to contribute to the intervertebral foramen between adjacent levels. Facet (zygapophysial) joints lie posterior and slightly lateral to the vertebral body, and the sacrum is visible inferiorly as the transition into the lumbosacral region. A lateral view like this makes the geometry of the neural exit corridor easy to teach: the intervertebral foramen is formed by the juxtaposition of the superior and inferior vertebral notches, bounded anteriorly by the vertebral body and disc and posteriorly by the facet joint complex. Clinically, that relationship underpins lumbar radiculopathy from foraminal stenosis at L3 to L4, where disc height loss or osteophytes can narrow the foramen and irritate the exiting L3 nerve root; it also frames why pars interarticularis defects and degenerative spondylolisthesis alter foraminal dimensions.
