Description
Prominent on the posterolateral trunk, the latissimus dorsi forms a broad muscular sheet arising from the thoracolumbar fascia and lower thoracic spinous processes, with additional slips from the inferior ribs, then sweeping superolaterally toward the axilla to converge on its humeral insertion at the floor of the intertubercular sulcus. Along its deep surface, the rib cage contours remain visible, clarifying how the muscle drapes over the posterior thoracic wall and approaches the scapula without attaching to it. Superiorly, the muscle’s tendon passes anterior to the teres major near the posterior axillary fold, while inferiorly the fibers blend into the dense lumbar fascia above the iliac crest. Bony landmarks include the scapula, proximal humerus and glenohumeral joint, thoracic vertebrae, and multiple ribs. A lateral gross anatomy view like this matters when teaching shoulder mechanics because latissimus dorsi contributes to glenohumeral extension, adduction, and internal rotation, and it becomes a dominant mover in climbing, swimming, and crutch-assisted gait.
