Description
Positioned under the right hemidiaphragm, the liver fills the right hypochondrium and extends medially across the epigastrium, with a smaller left lobe reaching toward the left upper quadrant. Its convex superior (diaphragmatic) surface lies deep to the costal margin, while the inferior (visceral) surface faces the stomach, duodenum, and hepatic flexure of the colon. Anteriorly, the organ sits just deep to the anterior abdominal wall, and posteriorly it approaches the inferior vena cava and the bare area where peritoneum is absent. Size and silhouette are presented in situ. For teaching topography, an over-body, semi-transparent presentation clarifies why right upper quadrant pain, hepatomegaly, or a subphrenic collection can refer to the shoulder via diaphragmatic irritation. The inferior surface orientation also supports procedural planning, since the gallbladder fossa and porta hepatis region (entry of the portal triad) determine common ultrasound windows and guide safe trajectories for percutaneous liver biopsy or abscess drainage.
