Description
Centered within the male thorax, the right and left lungs flank the mediastinum, with the right lung larger and divided into superior, middle, and inferior lobes and the left lung divided into superior and inferior lobes with a cardiac notch. Superiorly, the larynx continues into the trachea, whose C-shaped cartilaginous rings are rendered as transverse ridges before the airway descends toward the main bronchi at the level of the sternal angle. A transparent skeletal overlay situates the lungs deep to the rib cage, with posterior ribs and thoracic vertebrae behind, clavicles and scapular regions superior-lateral, and the diaphragmatic bases of the lungs inferior. That spatial context matters when you teach or plan around surface anatomy and the mechanics of ventilation. Lobar boundaries explain why aspiration tends to track into the right lower lobe via the more vertical right main bronchus, and why a pleural effusion layers dependently along the costodiaphragmatic recess, blunting the costophrenic angle on an upright chest radiograph. The airway depiction also supports discussion of endotracheal tube depth, where right mainstem intubation can selectively ventilate the right lung and collapse the left. Clear relationships.
