Description

Superiorly, the clavicular head blends with the anterior shoulder contour, while inferiorly the lower costal fibers approach the costal margin and the epigastrium where the trunk musculature transitions toward the rectus sheath. A semi-transparent integument highlights the relationship between superficial fascia and the muscle bellies, with the midline sternum providing a clear medial landmark. Fiber direction is explicit. Palpating and operating in the anterior chest depends on understanding this topography, because the pectoralis major overlies the pectoralis minor, ribs, and intercostal spaces that guide procedures such as chest tube placement and parasternal interventions.
