Description
Centered on the posterior cranium, the occipital bone is highlighted from the external occipital protuberance down toward the squamous part and occipital plane, with the superior nuchal lines sweeping laterally toward the mastoid regions. Superiorly and superolaterally, the occipital bone meets the paired parietal bones at the lambdoid suture, a clear serrated boundary for orienting the calvaria in anatomical position. Inferior to the skull, the upper cervical spine aligns beneath the occiput, with C1 (atlas) immediately deep to the craniovertebral junction and the remaining cervical vertebrae stacked in the midline.
