Description
Frontal orientation of an adult female skull places the paired parietal bones as a smooth, gently convex cap over the superolateral cranium, highlighted to distinguish them from the adjacent frontal and temporal bones. Along the midline, the right and left parietals meet at the sagittal suture, while their anterior borders articulate with the frontal bone at the coronal suture; inferiorly, each parietal approaches the squamous part of the temporal bone and the greater wing of the sphenoid near the pterion. Facial elements, including the orbits, nasal aperture, maxilla, and dentition, remain visible inferior and anterior to the parietal region, with the upper cervical vertebrae providing inferior context. For teaching surface anatomy and neurosurgical landmarks, this anterior view clarifies how the calvaria sits relative to the orbit and zygomatic region, helping learners translate external palpation points to underlying sutures. The parietal bone’s relationship to the pterion matters in trauma, where fracture can lacerate the anterior branch of the middle meningeal artery and produce an epidural hematoma, and in operative planning, where burr hole placement and craniotomy flaps are often referenced to the coronal suture and the midline overlying the superior sagittal sinus.
