Description
Positioned on the lateral skull but visible from the front, the temporal bone is highlighted at the temple region where its squamous part contributes to the lateral wall of the cranial vault. Superiorly it meets the parietal bone at the squamosal suture, while anteriorly it overlaps the greater wing of the sphenoid and approaches the zygomatic bone at the zygomaticotemporal junction. Inferiorly, the temporal region relates to the root of the zygomatic arch and the mandibular fossa, which sits just anterior to the external acoustic meatus (largely concealed in a strict anterior view). Cervical vertebrae appear inferior to the occipital region, supporting the cranium in anatomical position. Anterior orientation matters because it teaches how the temporal squama frames the lateral orbit and sets the bony context for the temporomandibular joint, even when the articular surface itself is only partly appreciated. Pain localized to the temple is often musculoskeletal, but temporal bone landmarks also guide reduction of zygomatic arch fractures and placement of surgical portals for TMJ arthroscopy. This is also where pterion anatomy becomes clinically concrete, since the thin squamous temporal bone participates in the pterion region overlying the anterior branch of the middle meningeal artery. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and dental anatomy coursework to anchor osteology of the craniofacial skeleton, and in radiology or maxillofacial surgery teaching to correlate palpated surface landmarks with CT-based fracture patterns of the zygomaticomaxillary complex and temporal region.
