Description
Centered in an anterior view, the female skull is presented with the frontal bone superiorly, paired parietal bones meeting at the sagittal suture, and the coronal suture separating frontal from parietals. The orbits are framed by the frontal bone and zygomatic bones laterally, while the nasal aperture sits midline above the maxillae and their visible dentition. Inferior to the maxilla, the mandible articulates at the temporomandibular joints, with the mandibular body forming the lower facial contour and the rami ascending posteriorly toward the cranial base. Caudally, the occipital region transitions to the cervical vertebrae, and the clavicles and superior rib cage appear in the upper thorax. An anterior skull orientation like this is the workhorse for correlating surface facial landmarks with underlying bone, from the supraorbital margin to the zygomatic arch and the mandibular angle. Trauma assessment often starts here: orbital rim and zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures, nasal bone injury, and mandibular fractures are read by following buttresses and symmetry relative to the midline.
