Description
Seen in lateral profile, the cranial vault and facial skeleton include the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital bones with the zygomatic bone projecting anteriorly to form the cheek and part of the zygomatic arch. Inferior to the temporal bone, the mandibular ramus rises to the condylar process, which articulates with the mandibular fossa and articular eminence to form the temporomandibular joint, while the mastoid process sits posterior and inferior to the external acoustic meatus. Posterior to the mandible, the upper cervical spine is aligned beneath the skull base, with the atlas and axis region implied along the cervical vertebral column. Surface anatomy matters here. Muscle overlay gives this bony view real clinical traction: the temporalis fans over the temporal fossa to insert on the coronoid process, and the masseter spans from the zygomatic arch to the lateral ramus and angle of the mandible, framing the TMJ and common sites of mandibular fractures. Palpation landmarks are clear, including the mastoid process as a reference for the sternocleidomastoid attachment and the posterior border of the mandibular ramus, a corridor used in extraoral approaches to the condyle and in assessing TMJ dislocation or osteoarthritic remodeling. The relationship between skull base, jaw, and upper cervical alignment also supports teaching of head posture contributions to temporomandibular disorders. Use this asset in head and neck anatomy courses to teach osteology with clinically relevant surface landmarks, or in oral and maxillofacial surgery and ENT publications discussing TMJ mechanics, mandibular trauma, and mastoid region approaches.
