Description
Centered in the midface, the paired zygomatic bones (os zygomaticum) are highlighted along the inferolateral orbital rim, articulating medially with the maxilla at the zygomaticomaxillary suture and superiorly with the frontal bone at the frontozygomatic suture. Laterally, each zygomatic bone projects toward the temporal bone as the zygomatic process, contributing to the zygomatic arch and framing the lateral cheek contour. The orbital surface forms part of the lateral orbital wall and rim, bordering the maxillary alveolar process and dentition inferiorly and sitting anterolateral to the visible cervical vertebrae at the skull base. Sutural lines across the cranium remain readable for orientation. Anterior visualization of the zygomatic bone matters because it is the keystone of the zygomaticomaxillary complex, the region involved in classic tripod fractures after blunt facial trauma, where disruption at the frontozygomatic suture, infraorbital rim, and zygomatic arch can widen the face, flatten the malar eminence, and alter globe position. Orbital margin alignment here also supports teaching of enophthalmos and diplopia mechanisms when the lateral wall and adjacent orbital floor are displaced, and it helps correlate infraorbital nerve symptoms when the fracture line propagates into the infraorbital canal of the maxilla. Small foramina on the zygomatic bone orient the course of the zygomaticofacial and zygomaticotemporal nerves. Landmarks are unmistakable.
