Female Temporal Bone

Description

Presented in right lateral profile, the female temporal bone is singled out against the surrounding cranium, sitting inferior to the parietal bone along the squamous suture and anterior to the occipital bone near the lambdoid suture. Posteriorly, the mastoid region lies just behind the external acoustic meatus, while the zygomatic process projects anteriorly to meet the zygomatic bone and form the zygomatic arch. Inferior to the temporal fossa, the mandibular condyle articulates with the mandibular fossa and articular tubercle of the temporal bone at the temporomandibular joint, with the maxilla and mandible establishing the facial framework. The upper cervical spine anchors the cranial base, with the atlas (C1) supporting the occipital condyles and the axis (C2) positioned immediately inferior, defining the craniocervical junction in neutral posture. Clear landmarks. Temporal bone anatomy in lateral view is the workhorse for teaching head and neck surface relationships and for explaining why temporal trauma can present with otologic and neurologic findings. Fractures through the petrous part can traverse the carotid canal, disrupt the ossicular chain, or injure the facial nerve as it courses through the facial canal, and mastoid involvement raises the stakes for intracranial spread of infection. Keeping the temporomandibular joint in the same field also helps clarify how preauricular pain, malocclusion, or limited mouth opening can arise from condylar fractures or internal derangement, not just dental disease.
