Temporal Bone

Description

Presented in lateral profile, the skull is oriented to emphasize the temporal bone (highlighted in blue) along the posterolateral cranial wall, interposed between the parietal bone superiorly and the zygomatic bone anterolaterally, with the occipital bone lying posteriorly at the occipitomastoid region. The squamous part forms the thin lateral vault, sending the zygomatic process anteriorly toward the zygomatic arch, while the mastoid process projects inferiorly and posteriorly behind the external acoustic meatus. Just anterior to the meatus, the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone sits superior to the mandibular condyle, defining the temporal component of the temporomandibular joint, and inferiorly the styloid process descends toward the parapharyngeal space. The upper cervical vertebrae appear directly inferior to the cranial base, placing the temporal region in context with the craniovertebral junction. A lateral view like this is the practical starting point for correlating surface landmarks with deep temporal bone anatomy, because the external acoustic meatus, mastoid process, and zygomatic root guide you to the middle ear cleft, mastoid air cells, and the course of the facial nerve within the temporal (facial) canal. Temporal bone fracture patterns often declare themselves along the squamous and petrous portions and can present with hemotympanum, conductive hearing loss, or delayed facial palsy. It also frames TMJ mechanics: anterior translation of the mandibular condyle occurs along the articular eminence of the temporal bone, a common focus in internal derangement and arthroscopy planning. Landmarks matter.
