Description
Arising from the abdominal aorta just inferior to the origin of the superior mesenteric artery, the right and left renal arteries course laterally toward the renal hila, framed by the lower rib cage superiorly and the iliac bones inferiorly. From an anterior perspective, the descending thoracic aorta continues through the diaphragm into the abdominal aorta, while the inferior vena cava ascends on the patient’s right, running parallel to the arterial trunk. Bony landmarks include the sternum and costal cartilages anteriorly with the vertebral column centered posterior to the great vessels. Color coding distinguishes arterial red from venous blue. Clear and immediate. Renal artery anatomy matters because laterality and proximity to the inferior vena cava drive both pathology and approach, the right renal artery typically has a longer course and passes posterior to the vena cava en route to the right kidney. Ostial atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis at the aortic origin remains a common cause of secondary hypertension and ischemic nephropathy, and this view supports teaching of why endovascular access targets the aortic takeoff rather than distal hilar branches. It also maps the expected corridor for surgical and interventional procedures, from open aortic work to renal transplantation planning, where accessory renal arteries can change clamp strategy and anastomotic design.
