Description
Oriented in anatomical position, the anterior aspect of a single male kidney is rendered in cross-section, preserving the external reniform contour while opening the parenchyma to the hilum. A pale renal cortex forms the peripheral rim, deep to which the renal medulla organizes into multiple pyramid-shaped medullary pyramids whose apices converge toward the renal sinus. Medially, the renal pelvis occupies the collecting region and continues inferiorly as the ureter, while the renal artery enters and the renal vein exits at the hilum, their segmental and interlobar branches tracking between pyramids toward arcuate vessels at the corticomedullary junction. An anterior cutaway like this gives the clearest teaching view of how perfusion and urine outflow share the crowded real estate of the renal sinus. It maps directly onto clinical patterns: renal artery stenosis compromises cortical perfusion first, and obstruction at the ureteropelvic junction distends the renal pelvis and calyceal system, producing hydronephrosis with progressive compression of medullary pyramids. Surgeons also think in this geometry when planning nephron-sparing partial nephrectomy, where segmental arterial anatomy and the relationship of a mass to the hilum determine clamping strategy and risk to the collecting system. Short and to the point.
