Description
Positioned retroperitoneally on either side of the vertebral column, the paired kidneys are shown from a posterior perspective with the smooth renal capsule and underlying renal cortex emphasized along their convex lateral borders. Superior poles carry the suprarenal (adrenal) glands, while the medial hila face toward the abdominal aorta on the left and the inferior vena cava on the right. Renal arteries branch laterally from the aorta to enter each hilum, and the renal veins course medially to drain into the inferior vena cava, with proximal ureters descending inferiorly from the renal pelvis. Fine autonomic nerves and lymphatic channels are suggested adjacent to the renal vessels along the medial margins. Posterior orientation matters because it aligns with how you approach the kidney clinically, both on imaging and in the operating room. A clear read on right versus left renal vascular anatomy helps when interpreting contrast CT or planning nephrectomy, where short right renal vein length and proximity to the inferior vena cava can complicate hilar control. This view also supports teaching of segmental renal blood supply and ischemia risk, since end-arterial branches make partial nephrectomy margins and clamping strategies anatomy-dependent.
