Description
Positioned retroperitoneally, the right kidney is presented from a posterior aspect with its fibrous capsule investing the renal cortex, while the renal hilum sits medial to the convex lateral border and gives rise to the renal artery and renal vein alongside the proximal ureter. Superior to the upper pole, the suprarenal (adrenal) gland caps the kidney. Yellow lymphatic vessels track medially and superiorly along the renal vessels toward paraaortic (lumbar) lymph nodes adjacent to the abdominal aorta, with the inferior vena cava lying to the right of midline. Small autonomic nerve fibers accompany the vessels at the hilum. Clear landmarks. Renal lymphatic drainage matters most when you need to predict the first-echelon nodes for malignancy and infection.
