Description
Anterior anatomy centers on the renal parenchyma of a male kidney with its medial hilum and collecting system opened to reveal the renal pelvis, major and minor calyces, and the proximal ureter descending inferiorly. Superior to the upper pole sits the suprarenal (adrenal) gland, with the right gland characteristically pyramidal or triangular, and its internal organization implied as outer adrenal cortex surrounding the adrenal medulla. A thin fibrous renal capsule invests the kidney directly, while a more superficial adipose capsule (perirenal fat) is separated from it as distinct layers; all of these structures relate medially to the expected course of the renal artery and renal vein at the hilum. That separation of layers is the teaching point most clinicians look for. Perinephric fluid collections, subcapsular hematoma, and perinephric abscess behave differently depending on whether they lie beneath the renal capsule or within the perirenal space, and the anterior view helps clarify why the kidney can be compressed without immediate communication to the collecting system. Adrenal morphology also matters in daily practice: the triangular right suprarenal gland is a landmark on CT and MRI when distinguishing normal gland from an adrenal adenoma, metastasis, or hemorrhage adjacent to the upper pole. Use this artwork in renal anatomy and endocrine modules, urology and general surgery teaching files, and radiology captions that need clean correlation between renal cortex and medulla, calyceal anatomy, and suprarenal location. It also supports patient-facing explanations of hydronephrosis, ureteropelvic junction obstruction, and adrenal incidentaloma reporting by showing the renal pelvis and ureter in context.
