Description
Oriented from a posterior perspective of the male abdomen, the paired suprarenal (adrenal) glands sit on the superomedial poles of the kidneys, with the right gland more pyramidal and the left more semilunar in keeping with typical morphology. Each gland’s cortex forms the outer rim around a central medulla, and both lie posterior to the peritoneal cavity, tucked against the diaphragmatic crura. Medial to the renal hila, the abdominal aorta runs slightly left of midline and the inferior vena cava to the right, giving rise to renal arteries and receiving renal veins that course transversely to the kidneys.
