Description
Centered in an anterior abdominal view, the paired suprarenal (adrenal) glands sit on the superomedial poles of the kidneys, capping the superior renal contours like flattened wedges. The right adrenal gland lies adjacent to the inferior vena cava and the superior pole of the right kidney, while the left adrenal gland is positioned more medial to the left kidney and closer to the abdominal aorta. Renal arteries arise laterally from the aorta and pass toward the renal hila, and renal veins course medially to drain into the inferior vena cava; ureters descend inferiorly from each renal pelvis. Fine autonomic nerves and lymphatics track along the great vessels and into the renal and suprarenal regions. Clear landmarks. Corticomedullary organization matters here: the adrenal cortex wraps the medulla, and their distinct endocrine outputs are clinically separable even when the glands appear as a single structure grossly. This anterior perspective also helps orient common operative and interventional corridors, since the right adrenal’s relationship to the inferior vena cava increases the consequence of venous injury during adrenalectomy, while the left side’s proximity to the aorta and left renal vein frames exposure and vascular control. You can also map the typical routes of adrenal venous drainage, a frequent stumbling point when explaining why right adrenal vein ligation differs from the left.
