Description
Kidney parenchyma is opened in an anterior section, exposing the outer renal cortex as a continuous peripheral band and the deeper medulla arranged into renal pyramids separated by cortical renal columns. Toward the central renal sinus, the papillae project medially into the minor calyces, which converge into major calyces and then the funnel-shaped renal pelvis at the hilum. A thin renal capsule outlines the organ surface, while the cortex sits superficial to the medulla along the entire convex lateral margin. Orientation reads from lateral to medial and from superior pole to inferior pole in a single, fixed plane. Corticomedullary anatomy matters because many renal diseases localize by compartment, and this sectional perspective makes that compartmentalization easy to teach and reference. Renal cell carcinoma most often arises from cortical tubular epithelium, whereas acute pyelonephritis and papillary necrosis track through the medulla and can involve the papillary tips where they meet the collecting system. It is a practical map for procedures too: percutaneous renal biopsy targets the cortex to sample glomeruli while avoiding major calyces and segmental vessels clustered nearer the renal sinus.
