Description
Arising from the facial artery near the oral commissure, the inferior labial artery courses anteriorly within the lower lip, deep to the orbicularis oris and close to the labial glands and mucosa. A lateral male skull context places it inferior to the maxillary teeth and anterior to the mandibular body, with the vessel running parallel to the vermilion border before contributing to the labial arterial arcade. Nearby landmarks likely include the mental artery emerging at the mental foramen and the facial artery ascending along the anteroinferior margin of the masseter toward the angle of the mouth. Small arterioles branch superiorly and inferiorly. Clear orientation matters. This lateral perspective is the one you want when teaching why lower lip bleeding can be brisk, and why hemostasis often requires more than superficial pressure when the labial arcade is involved.
