Shown from a left lateral perspective, the superior labial artery branches from the facial artery just lateral to the oral commissure and then courses medially within the upper lip, running deep to the orbicularis oris and parallel to the vermilion border. Superiorly, its territory relates to the maxilla and anterior nasal region, with potential anastomoses toward the lateral nasal and angular arteries as the facial artery ascends along the nasolabial fold. Adjacent venous channels of the facial vein accompany the arterial course more posteriorly and inferiorly, while the bony landmarks of the maxilla, mandible, and visible dentition anchor the soft tissue vascular anatomy in space. For procedural anatomy, this lateral rendering clarifies where the facial artery becomes superficial as it crosses the inferior border of the mandible anterior to the masseter, then turns toward the mouth to give off the superior labial artery. That relationship matters in lacerations at the upper lip and oral commissure, where brisk bleeding reflects the labial arterial arcade and its midline anastomosis with the contralateral superior labial artery. It also supports safe planning for cleft lip repair, local mucosal advancement flaps, and perioral filler injection, where inadvertent intra-arterial injection can compromise the upper lip and nasal ala and, via anastomoses toward the angular and ophthalmic systems, carries a recognized risk of retinal ischemia.
