Description
Arising from the external carotid artery within the parotid region, the superficial temporal artery ascends superiorly just anterior to the auricle, coursing over the root of the zygomatic process of the temporal bone toward the temporal fossa and scalp. A lateral view also places it in relation to the mandibular ramus and condylar process inferiorly, and the squamous temporal bone and lateral orbital margin anteriorly. Posteriorly, the mastoid region and the upper cervical vertebrae provide bony landmarks behind the vascular column. Venous counterparts track nearby as blue channels, reinforcing the surface anatomy around the ear and temple. Clinically, this is the artery you palpate at the temple, just anterior to the tragus, and the one targeted in temporal artery biopsy for suspected giant cell (temporal) arteritis. Its close passage across the zygomatic arch and superficial course within the temporoparietal fascia explain why blunt trauma or lacerations in the lateral scalp can bleed briskly and why careful hemostasis matters during face-lift incisions and parotid surgery. The parotid relationship is a teaching point, the vessel begins deep to the gland then becomes subcutaneous as it climbs. Easy to miss. Use this plate in head and neck anatomy labs to orient students to external carotid branching, in otolaryngology and maxillofacial surgery texts to support surface marking and incision planning, or in rheumatology and primary care education when illustrating the diagnostic pathway for giant cell arteritis. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
