Description
Seen in lateral profile on a male head and upper neck, the superficial temporal artery ascends anterior to the auricle after emerging from the parotid region and then divides into its frontal branch coursing anterosuperiorly across the temporal fossa toward the forehead. The frontal branch runs in the superficial fascia over the temporalis muscle, passing superior to the zygomatic arch and remaining anterior to the external acoustic meatus, with accompanying superficial temporal veins in close parallel. Deep bony landmarks such as the temporal squama, zygomatic bone, and lateral orbital rim provide fixed orientation, while the cervical vertebrae sit inferior and posterior in the same lateral plane. Palpation and protection of the frontal branch matter in everyday practice because it is one of the most accessible scalp arteries for pulse assessment and a frequent source of brisk bleeding with lacerations in the temporal region. This course also intersects common incision lines for frontotemporal (pterional) craniotomy and cosmetic procedures around the temple and brow, where injury can complicate flap perfusion or provoke troublesome hematoma. Temporal arteritis (giant cell arteritis) classically involves the superficial temporal artery and is assessed along this superficial trajectory during bedside examination and biopsy planning. A small artery with outsized clinical consequences.
