Description
Running superiorly in the temple, the superficial temporal artery is shown ascending in the preauricular region immediately anterior to the auricle, where it becomes palpable as it crosses the root of the zygomatic arch. Its course lies superficial to the temporalis fascia and deep to the skin, traveling over the lateral aspect of the squamous temporal bone before dividing into frontal and parietal branches toward the scalp. Surrounding landmarks in lateral profile include the temporalis and masseter muscles, the parotid region overlying the mandibular ramus, and the sternocleidomastoid descending inferoposteriorly in the neck. Superficial veins accompany the arterial pathway in the same field. For teaching and procedural planning, this lateral perspective clarifies why the vessel is both accessible and vulnerable: the artery runs in a narrow corridor between the auricle and lateral orbit where lacerations can bleed briskly and where bandaging must avoid unintended compression. Temporal artery biopsy for suspected giant cell (temporal) arteritis is commonly performed along the palpable preauricular segment or its frontal branch, and this view helps frame safe incision placement relative to the zygomatic arch and the hairline.
