Proximally, hair-bearing integument of the distal leg transitions at the anterior ankle to thinner, more mobile dorsal skin over the extensor tendons, then continues distally to the toe creases at the metatarsophalangeal and interphalangeal joints. Medially and laterally, the contours of the first and fifth rays frame the forefoot, while the nail plates and periungual folds define the distal phalanges.
