Description
Running along the lateral aspect of the tibial shaft, the interosseous border (margo interosseus tibiae) appears as a sharp longitudinal crest that separates the anterolateral surface from the posterior surface. The animation holds a lateral view while the tibia subtly rotates, letting the ridge catch the light so its knife edge profile reads clearly from the proximal third toward the distal metaphysis. Nearby landmarks come into and out of prominence with the turn, including the anterior border (shin crest), the lateral condyle region superiorly, and the medial malleolus projecting inferiorly and medially. Orientation of the interosseous border matters because it defines the attachment line for the interosseous membrane of the leg, the fibrous sheet spanning to the fibular interosseous border and stabilizing the tibiofibular relationship while providing compartmental separation. Misreading this crest is a common student error when distinguishing tibia from fibula or when side-labeling bones on practical exams, and it can also complicate interpretation of fracture patterns along the tibial shaft on radiographs or CT, where the crest can mimic a cortical step-off if the bone is obliquely oriented.
