Description
Arising from the left pulmonary artery, the lateral basal segmental artery courses inferiorly and laterally toward the lower lobe, tracking alongside the segmental bronchus to the lateral basal segment (S9). Its distal branches arborize toward the pleural surface of the costal face, lying posterior to the lingula and inferior to the oblique fissure region where lower-lobe segmentation becomes apparent. Central thoracic landmarks remain visible, including the main pulmonary trunk, right and left pulmonary arteries, pulmonary veins returning to the left atrium, and the trachea bifurcating at the carina into the main bronchi. Color coding separates oxygen-poor pulmonary arterial flow from oxygen-rich pulmonary venous return. Segmental arterial anatomy matters most when you need to match a vessel to a bronchopulmonary segment in the operating room or on CT pulmonary angiography, and S9 is a frequent source of confusion because it sits posterolateral and can be mistaken for posterior basal (S10) supply when branches overlap in projection. This perspective supports planning for VATS segmentectomy or sublobar resection by clarifying how a distal segmental artery maintains a close, parallel relationship with its segmental bronchus, a practical cue during hilar dissection. Small, peripheral emboli and AV malformations also localize by segment, so consistent identification of the lateral basal arterial tree can tighten radiology-pathology correlation.
