Description
Centered in the thorax, the right pulmonary artery is traced from its origin at the pulmonary trunk toward the right hilum, where it courses with the right main bronchus and divides into lobar and segmental branches. The posterior basal segmental artery (A10) is carried inferiorly into the lower lobe, running posterior and slightly lateral to the lower lobe bronchus before entering the posterior basal bronchopulmonary segment. Superior and anterior in the field, the trachea bifurcates at the carina into the main bronchi, while the heart occupies the anteroinferior mediastinum with the great vessels, including the ascending aorta and aortic arch, providing midline reference. Color coding distinguishes pulmonary arterial flow from pulmonary venous return, clarifying vessel identity against the bronchial tree. Segmental pulmonary arteries matter because they define the vascular boundaries surgeons respect during anatomical segmentectomy and lower-lobe resections.
