Description
Anterior gluteal line arcs across the lateral surface of the ilium, running inferiorly and posteriorly from the region just posterior to the anterior superior iliac spine toward the superior margin of the acetabulum. Superior to the ridge, the iliac crest forms the broad, palpable border of the ala (wing), while inferiorly the lateral ilium transitions toward the acetabular rim. The line sits lateral to the iliac fossa and medial to the external contour of the iliac tubercle area, defining a subtle change in relief on the outer table of the pelvic bone. Landmarks are isolated and easy to localize. For teaching myology, the anterior gluteal line is the key surface reference for the origins of gluteus medius (between the posterior and anterior gluteal lines) and gluteus minimus (between the anterior and inferior gluteal lines), so its position helps students anchor muscle maps to real bony topography rather than memorized boundaries. In the clinic, that same ridge matters when orienting the ilium during preoperative planning for pelvic and acetabular fracture fixation, and when describing lateral ilium exposure in approaches that work between abductor muscle planes while staying mindful of the superior gluteal neurovascular bundle.
