Description
Centered in the proximal carpal row, the lunate is highlighted on an anterior (palmar) view of the male hand skeleton, positioned medial to the scaphoid and lateral to the triquetrum, with the pisiform lying even more palmar and ulnar. Its broad, concave proximal articular surface faces superiorly toward the distal radius, while the distal facet turns inferiorly to meet the capitate in the midline of the wrist. Distal to the carpus, the metacarpals extend toward the phalanges, establishing the longitudinal axis of each digit. Orientation is clear. For teaching wrist mechanics, this palmar perspective makes it easier to relate lunate morphology to the radiocarpal and midcarpal joint spaces and to understand how force transfers from the radius into the central column of the hand through the capitate. Clinically, the lunate is a key landmark in evaluating perilunate injuries and lunate dislocation, where the bone can rotate and translate volarly, compromising carpal alignment and, in severe cases, contributing to median nerve symptoms in the carpal tunnel.
