Description
Centered in an anterior orientation, the trachea descends in the midline from the larynx and bifurcates at the carina into the right and left main bronchi, which enter the lung hila just lateral to the mediastinum. The right lung lies slightly more superior and broader, divided by the horizontal fissure and oblique fissure into superior, middle, and inferior lobes, while the left lung presents only an oblique fissure separating superior and inferior lobes. Subtle surface patterning suggests the branching bronchial tree extending distally toward bronchioles and alveolar parenchyma beneath the visceral pleura. Fissures read cleanly from the front. An anterior lung view gives the clearest teaching angle on lobar anatomy and on why aspiration and endobronchial intubation more often involve the right bronchial tree, which is typically wider and more vertical than the left. It also supports procedural planning for bronchoscopy by reinforcing the relationship between the tracheal bifurcation and the proximal bronchi, a key landmark when confirming tube position or identifying an obstructing lesion. Think lobar collapse patterns, too: right middle lobe atelectasis can be localized confidently when you can orient the horizontal fissure and adjacent lobes in frontal perspective. Use this rendering in gross anatomy and respiratory modules to anchor terminology such as trachea, carina, bronchi, lobes, and fissures before moving to radiographs, CT (coronal reconstructions), and bronchoscopy videos.
