Description
Running along the posterior thoracic and lumbar spine, the dorsal rami exit the intervertebral foramina and divide into medial and lateral branches that course across the laminae and transverse processes. Medial branches track closer to the spinous processes, passing in a deeper plane beneath the thoracolumbar fascia and the overlying erector spinae, while the lateral filaments remain more peripheral over the rib angles and posterolateral trunk. Scapulae overlie the upper thorax, ribs curve laterally from the thoracic vertebrae, and the superior pelvis frames the inferior field. Medial branches of the dorsal rami matter because they supply the zygapophysial (facet) joints via articular twigs and innervate the deep paraspinal musculature and overlying skin in a segmental pattern.
