Description

Medial sectioning of the diencephalon brings the mediodorsal (dorsomedial) nucleus of the thalamus into profile as a deep gray matter mass bordering the third ventricle. Superiorly it lies beneath the stratum medullare internum and near the medullary laminae that partition the thalamic nuclear groups, while posterior and inferior relationships trend toward the pulvinar region and hypothalamic sulcus, respectively. Across the sequence, the animation holds a true medial view while subtly stepping through depth cues that separate the mediodorsal nucleus from adjacent medial nuclear group components and the ependymal surface of the ventricle. Boundaries matter. Clinically, the mediodorsal nucleus sits at the intersection of limbic and prefrontal circuitry, with reciprocal connections to the prefrontal cortex and dense input from the amygdala and basal ganglia via thalamic relays. Lesions from paramedian thalamic infarcts or deep venous thrombosis can involve this territory and present with disproportionate executive dysfunction, apathy, memory disturbance, or altered affect, findings that can look “psychiatric” unless you localize the diencephalon. A moving medial perspective helps learners track how a compact nuclear mass relates to the third ventricle and internal medullary lamina, orientation points that often get lost in static atlas slices and MRI correlation. Use this animation in neuroanatomy and behavioral neuroscience teaching, in figure panels for chapters on thalamic functional neuroanatomy, or as a briefing visual for stroke teams discussing paramedian thalamic syndromes and their cognitive profiles. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
