Trabecular (spongy) bone is rendered as a three-dimensional lattice of interconnecting trabeculae separated by marrow spaces, with the osseous struts forming a repeating network of plates and rods. Within the cubic volume, the bony trabeculae define a high surface area framework while the bone marrow cavity occupies most of the internal space. Surfaces are shown as exposed cancellous bone rather than cortical shell, so the periosteum is not a dominant feature and would normally lie on the external cortex, not on the internal trabecular surfaces.
