Description
Radiating hepatocyte plates form a hexagonal liver lobule organized around a central vein (terminal hepatic venule) positioned centrally, with sinusoidal channels running from the periphery toward that venous outflow. Portal tracts sit at each lobular corner and contain the portal vein branch (blue) and hepatic arteriole (red) lying adjacent to an interlobular bile ductule (green). Bile canaliculi arise between neighboring hepatocytes and conduct bile centrifugally, away from the central vein and toward the portal areas, opposite to the centripetal flow of mixed portal venous and arterial blood through the sinusoids. Opposing flows. Clear landmarks. Teaching bile duct morphology at the lobular perimeter matters because many hepatobiliary disorders localize to the cholangiocyte-lined ductules and interlobular ducts rather than to hepatocytes themselves.
